EMBEZZLEMENT
Embezzlement, defined:
The act of dishonestly withholding assets for the purpose of conversion (theft), by one or more individuals who have lawful possession of those assets, and to whom the assets have been entrusted for other purposes.
Embezzlement is a kind of financial fraud, which may range from the minor to immense, involving large sums and sophisticated schemes.
Embezzlement can be charged as either a State or Federal offense, exposing a defendant to long prison sentences, depending on the amount embezzled, among other factors.
