RICO
Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, commonly referred to as RICO, is a federal law that provides for extended criminal penalties and a civil cause of action for acts performed as part of an ongoing criminal organization.
The RICO Act focuses specifically on racketeering, and allows the leaders of an organization to be prosecuted for crimes they directed others to do, or assisted in.
RICO prosecutions will require the government to establish certain specified predicate acts occurred.
While established originally to be used in organized crime prosecutions, RICO has been expanded to cover prosecutions of cases such as Church Sex Abuse, Latin Kings, Scott Rothstein, and Police Department Corruption cases.
